Sea and beach
Along the entire North Sea coast of Ameland there is a sandy beach, which covers
27 km that are a source of inspiration and relaxation. Near each of the four
villages in Ameland there is a guarded beach with a pavilion. In the pavilions
one can eat and drink, rent beach chairs and windscreens, there are showers
and toilets, and wheelchairs for the beach can be borrowed there. Horse-riding
and fishing is allowed at the beach. Two beaches on the island are permitted
for naturists: between the entrances Ballumer Strandweg from Ballum and Oranjeweg
from Hollum. Parking and pavilions at beach entrances at 1 or 2 km distance,
and the entire area east of the Strandweg from Buren (pole 16 and up). This
last area is partly inaccessible from 15 April to 15 August. The ferry from
Ameland arrives in Nes' harbour, where sailing boats and pleasure yachts can
be moored as well. The excursions to the seals’ island start here as well.
Hiking and cycling
Bicycles are for rent at Nes' harbour and at the many small bicycle rent companies
in the island. For addresses, see www.vvvameland.nl.
Across the island, there is a bicycle path of 90 km in length, which goes through
the various landscapes. A map can be obtained with the tourist information office,
which makes it easy to plot your own route. Like cycling, the island is perfect
for walking. There are several woods, dune fields and sandy areas such as Het
Oerd and De Hon. Of course, you can also join in the popular sport of walking
across the mud flats. More information can be obtained with the tourist information
offices.
